Richard W. Gerdy 1941-2013

MASURY – Richard W. “Richie” Gerdy, 72, of Masury, passed away 5:40 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at Orlando Hospital in Orlando, Fla., following a sudden illness.

Richard was born on Feb. 15, 1941, in Sharon, Pa., to Michael and Rose Dunch Gerdy.

He graduated from Sharon High School, class of 1959.

On Aug. 11, 1962, he married Betty M. Marrie, who survives at home.

Richard worked as a truck driver for Preston Trucking for 13 years until his retirement in 1998. Richard was awarded the Million Mile Award from Preston, truck driving for a total of 34 years.

He was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Roman Catholic Church in Sharpsville, Pa.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, gardening and family reunions at his home.

Richard was a member of the Greenville Moose Lodge 276, Sharpsville VFW Post 6404, and was very active at Yankee Lake in various activities, where he was well known for his association with the organization.

Richard is survived by his loving spouse, Betty; two daughters, Ann M. Sowers of Hubbard and Susan E. (Jeffery) Porterfield of Hartford; son, John M. (Laurie) Gerdy of Hartford; brother, Lawrence (Dorothy) Gerdy of Hermitage, Pa.; two granddaughters, Shauna Gerdy and Macie Sowers; and grandson, Brandon Porterfield.

He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Gerdy; and mother, Rose Gerdy.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Donaldson-Mohney Funeral Home, 124 Main St., Sharpsville, where there will be funeral services at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Marc Stockton officiating. Internment will take place in St. Marys Cemetery.

His family is welcoming friends to Yankee Lake for refreshments and fellowship following Wednesday services.
