James D. Maderitz 1931-2013
GIRARD – James D. Maderitz, 81, passed away Monday evening, May 13, 2013, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown surrounded by his loving family.
Jim was born July 19, 1931, in Youngstown, the son of Ralph and Rose Scirocco Maderitz.
Jim was a member of St. Rose Church. He was a graduate of St. Rose School, Girard High School Class of 1949, and Heidelberg College Class of 1953. Jim served in the U.S. Army during the Korean campaign.
Jim enjoyed various careers. He started in the recording and entertainment industry during the mid-’50s and ’60s. He worked promotions with the top recording artist of the day. During this period, Jim produced the hit recording of “Rama Lama Ding Dong” by the local Edsel Group and published the song through his Jimbo Publishing. The song ranks today as a worldwide doo wop classic.
Jim then served as a teacher and supervisor at the experimental Mahoning Valley Vocational School. His mission was to work with disadvantaged youth from the state of Ohio.
Jim was then appointed in 1974 as the director of the Trumbull County Juvenile Court and served until 2001. Jim also served as the court’s project director for the drafting of the Domestic Relations Juvenile Court building.
Jim served on various state and local juvenile committees. He also served as grand knight of the Girard Knights of Columbus and president of the Girard Free Library board.
Jim really enjoyed sports, watching as well as participating. He was a starter on the first St. Rose football team in 1944, as well as the Girard High School Steel Valley Baseball Champions of 1948 and the Heidelberg College Ohio Conference Softball Champion of 1952.
Jim was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Jim enjoyed meeting new people and traveling to see his family and spending time with them.
Jim married Dolores “De” Reyes on Aug. 29, 1959. De passed away Dec. 25, 1995.
Jim leaves behind to remember and pray for him his son, Gregory R. (Renee) Maderitz of York, Pa.; his daughter, Marla Rose (Lee) Stauffer of Girard; his grandchildren, Gregory, Nicholas and Christopher Maderitz, and Sahara, Hayden and Dane Stauffer; his brother, Joseph Maderitz of Youngstown; and his close friend, Betty Kist of Ashtabula.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, De; and his son, James Maderitz.
Jim’s family will receive family and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at McClurkin Funeral Home.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Rose Catholic Church. There will be prayers at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning at the funeral home prior to the church Mass.
