Robert E. Mathis 1932-2013

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Robert Earl Mathis, 80, formerly of Newton Falls, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at his residence in Memphis.

He was born Nov. 26, 1932, in Linden, Tenn., to the late Mark M. Mathis and Dena Grooms Mathis.

Mr. Mathis was a veteran of the U.S. Army, stationed in Panama during the Korean War. He worked at Allen’s Bakery, Standard Transformer and retired from General Motors in Lordstown.

Bob, known by his friends and family, loved to hunt with his dad, was also an avid woodworker and most of all enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Story Mathis, and former wife, Chelo Williams Thomas of Warren; one daughter, Melody (Shelby) Tipton of Cabot, Ark.; four sons, Preston (Ruby) Mathis of Newton Falls; Nelson (Elizabeth) Thomas of Columbus; Tracy (Kathy) Thomas of Warren and Vaughn Thomas of Cortland; three sisters, Dorothy (Andy) Wiggs of Centerville, Tenn., Shirley (Earl) Hicks of Linden, Tenn., and Geneva (Carlos) Warren of Ecorse, Mich.; three stepdaughters, Sandra, Renea and Teresa; one stepson, Greg; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by one brother, E. Murl Mathis, and one sister, Mittie Pearl Carter, both of Tennessee; and former wife, Teresa Mondok Mathis, and two stepsons, Roger and Alex, all of Ohio.

Donations can be made to the St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital in Memphis.

Arrangements were handled by Family Funeral Care in Memphis.
