Mary E. Groner

WARREN – Mary Ellen Groner, 81, passed away on Friday, April 19, 2013, as a result of brain cancer.

Mary Ellen graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1950. She then attended Ohio University and graduated in 1954.

After graduation, Mary Ellen taught first- and second-graders at Emerson Elementary School in the Warren City School System.

Over the years, Mary Ellen was very active in the Women’s Panhellenic Association, St. Joseph Health Center Auxiliary gift shop, Mobile Meals, Blessed Sacrament bingo, and the St. Vincent de Paul soup kitchen. While her children were in school in Warren, she spent a great deal of her time helping at each school they attended.

Mary Ellen enjoyed golf, reading (The Book Club), traveling (especially with her high school girl friends), bridge club, water aerobics, bicycling, the “birthday girls” luncheons, and most importantly, her faith. She spent a good share of her life going to daily Mass and “bloodying her knees” while praying for her family and friends.

Mary Ellen is survived by her three sons, Tom (Janet), Jim (Barb) and Robert (Holly); and her brother, Henry J. Waldeck, Jr. (Polly). Mary Ellen thoroughly enjoyed her nine grandchildren, T.J., Laura, Mark, Kate, Jeremy, Allie, Becca, Christopher and Kyle. She especially enjoyed attending their athletic and school events. On numerous occasions, the grandchildren could hear Grandma “cheering” for them and their team.

Mary Ellen also enjoyed watching Cleveland professional sports teams, especially the Browns during the 1980s. She was especially fond of players she considered “cute,” such as quarterback Brian “Sipes” and receiver Brian Brennan. In fact, she named her dogs after the latter, quite the endorsement.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by Bob Groner, her husband of more than 55 years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Friends will be received at the church gathering space beginning at 11:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Trumbull Mobile Meals Inc., 323 E. Market St., Warren, OH 44481, Blessed Sacrament’s St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen, 3020 Reeves Road, Warren, OH 44483, or Hospice of the Valley, 5000 E. Market St., Suite 19, Warren, OH 44484.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Staton-Borowski Funeral Home, 962 North Road N.E., Warren, OH 44483.
