George A. Beck 1937-2013

HOWLAND – George A. Beck, 76, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at St. Joseph Health Center.

He was born March 7, 1937, in Baltimore, the son of John W. and Florence Alford Beck.

George moved to Warren and entered East Junior High School, and then attended Warren G. Harding High School, graduating in the class of 1956.

He attended Ohio University, then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served four honorable years and was discharged as a corporal and continued to be a proud Marine. He also attended Youngstown University.

George worked for Ohio Edison for 30 years as a senior residential representative before retiring. During the last years of retirement, he maintained the greens for Bronzwood Golf Course.

He was a big sports fan, a player in football, baseball and basketball, and was an avid golfer. He enjoyed golfing with friends, his children and grandchildren.

His family was the most important thing in his life. They include his “best friend” and caring companion, Withers Beck; a son, George A. (Gloria) Beck Jr.; daughters, Catherine (Michael) Hildack and Susan (William) Vardavas, both of Howland; grandchildren, George A. Beck III, Eileen Beck, Cadee Hildack, Christie Hildack, Callie Vardavas and Christopher Vardavas.

At his request, there are no calling hours. A private family service was held.

The family offers our sincere and deepest thanks to Dr. William Eddy and the staff at St. Joseph Health Center for their exceptional care of George and our family.
