Charles H. Mathews 1924-2013

HOWLAND – Charles Henry Mathews, 89, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, April 7, 2013.

Charles was born April 7, 1924, in Mason Town, W.Va., the son of Albert and Mable Deavers Mathews.

He was a proud World War II veteran, and served in the Navy as a machinist 1st class aboard the aircraft carrier Chenango. Charles was retired after 30 years from American Welding, where he was a supervisor. He spent most of his free time with family, which included watching his grandson race sprint cars.

Charles is survived by his wife of 66 years, Merle Shaffer Mathews; one son, Gary Mathews of Warren; grandson, Chad (Jennifer) Mathews of Fredonia, Pa.; and two great-grandchildren, Nathen and Hayley.

He was preceded in death by his brother and sister, Perry Mathews and Iva Martin.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts Clark Chapel, 180 Garfield Drive, Warren, OH 44483, where funeral services will also be held 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment will follow in the Crown Hill Burial Park.
