Carol J. Barrett 1951-2013

GIRARD – Carol J. Barrett, 61, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2013, at her home after a long battle with cancer.

Carol was born Oct. 18, 1951, in Youngstown, to John and Jean Sabino.

She attended St. Rose and graduated from Girard High School, where she met her husband, Dennis Barrett. Carol and Dennis married on Oct. 29, 1971. They raised six children together.

Carol spent the first 30 years of her marriage as a homemaker (aka referee, doctor, teacher, counselor, housemaid, laundress, taxi, chef, veterinarian, interior designer, landscaper and entertainer).

She was an accomplished artist and enjoyed crafts of all sorts. Carol was passionate about gardening and spent years improving the soil and doing research into the best ways to produce the best blooms for her gardens.

It was her love of crafts that led her to get a job at Michael’s as a custom framer. She worked there for nearly eight years.

She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. Throughout her long illness, she never stopped putting her family first. Even when the chemotherapy made her sick, she took the time to make cross-stitch pictures and knit afghans for her children and grandchildren.

She worked tirelessly to make every holiday special. She never stopped taking care of her gardens or the house. She spent hours on the phone talking to her children even when she was sick. She made flower arrangements for weddings and Halloween costumes for grandkids.

She never let on just how bad she was feeling. For 5 1/2 years, through two mastectomies and countless other medical procedures, she soldiered on with hardly a complaint. Carol was tough.

Carol is survived and sadly missed by her husband, Dennis; six children, Carlie Taylor, Lisa Barrett (Niko DePofi), Amy (Jason) Lucik, Kelly Barrett, Michael Barrett and Laura Barrett (Shawn Shriver); as well as her mother, Jean Jones; stepfather, Robert Jones; brother, Peter (Sue) Sabino; and especially her grandchildren, Mika DePofi, Eric Lucik and Emily Lucik.

She was welcomed into Heaven by her father, John Sabino, and grandfather, George Anderson.

Carol’s family will receive family and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday evening at McClurkin Funeral Home in Girard. There will be a funeral service at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning at the funeral home.

Her family request memorial contributions be made to Hospice of The Valley in her memory.
