Lucille J. Fairchild 1923-2013

CHAMPION – Lucille J. Fairchild, 89, died Thursday morning, Jan. 17, 2013, at her home.

She was born April 28, 1923, in Lockwood, the daughter of the late Abijah J. and Myrtle Belle Ketchum Finlaw.

Lucille enjoyed being a homemaker all of her married life. She was a 1941 graduate of Colebrook High School.

She was a member of Champion Presbyterian Church for more than 55 years, where she was an active member of Ladies Aide and the SOC senior citizens group, as well as a member of SCOPE. She had been very active with the annual rummage sales at the church and worked the jewelry table.

Lucille loved baking and was well known for her homemade pies. She enjoyed flower gardening and had a green thumb, car rides with her husband, picking berries and playing cards and card club, especially pinochle and 500.

Lucille was an avid reader, especially Christian books, including the Bible and “reflection” books. She loved her kitchen and loved any excellent recipe, her cookbooks, cooking and hosting family parties. She enjoyed sitting on the porch at home in her rocking chair.

Lucille was a good listener and peacemaker. She loved singing any time, especially hymns.

She will be greatly missed by her many friends and the many people who cared about her.

Lucille is survived by her husband of 70 years, Griffin F. “Griff” Fairchild, whom she married Aug. 29, 1942; one daughter, Linda L. (Larry) Stepanic of Champion; three grandchildren, Gregory F. (Amber) Stepanic, Julianne K. Stepanic and Keith Ian Stepanic; and three sisters, Louise Finlaw of Warren, Annabelle Uher of Champion and Florence Simon of Montville.

One brother, Jesse Finlaw, preceded her in death.

The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Champion Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Marvin Barney officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel in Warren and also one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

Burial will be at Champion Township Cemetery.
