Edwin F. Marek, 1924-2013

NILES – Edwin F. Marek, 88, of Niles, entered into rest at 4 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Autumn Hills Care Center.

Edwin was born May 7, 1924, in Dunkirk, N.Y., the son of John and Agnes Tomajczyk.

He was a 1942 graduate of Dunkirk High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in New Guinea and Luzon, Philippines, and Korea.

Having been discharged as staff sergeant, Edwin went on to college on the GI Bill, obtaining a four-year degree in chemical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1951.

He joined the Koppers Company in 1951 as plant engineer in Chicago, then as assistant manager in Warren and Buffalo plants, retiring in 1985 after 25 years as plant manager of the Garwood, N.J., plant.

In his younger years, he played guitar in a combo for various occasions, including a gig at the renown Medinah Country Club in Chicago.

Edwin and the former Martha Lally were married at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Niles in 1959, and together they enjoyed golf and travels, including trips to Russia, Poland, Rio and South Africa, among others. Included were rounds of golf on more than 20 different courses overseas, including Scotland, Spain, Ireland, Australia and four in South Africa, where he visited his cousin in Johannesburg.

Edwin’s membership organizations included the Rotary, Manufactures Club of West Hudson, and VP of the Chamber of Commerce, all of New Jersey; president of the Warren Tennis Club; American Legion Post 106 of Niles; Post 334 of Clark, N.J.; and the Kosciuszko Club of Dunkirk, N.Y.

His memory will be celebrated by those he leaves behind, his wife, Martha Marek, and four nephews and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Loretta; and a brother, Henry.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Staton-Borowski Funeral Home in Warren, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the services. Military honors will be by the Trumbull County Veterans Organization.

Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
