Niles schools receive ODE literacy grant

NILES — The Niles City School District has received a $600,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Education that will allow the district to improve language and literacy development for students in grades 6-12.

Niles City Schools is the only school district in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties to receive the Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Grant on its own, independent of a consortium. The three- year grant focuses on serving the greatest number of students living in poverty, students with disabilities, English learners and students identified as having reading difficulties.

According to the Ohio Department of Education, 110 individual and consortium applications, representing 208 entities, submitted applications. The state awarded a total of $33 million in grants to 46 school districts and consortiums of districts.
