Weathersfield honors area leader
WEATHERSFIELD — John Scheckelhoff has been presented the 2017 Community Leadership Award from township trustees noting his service to the area.
The award is given annually to individuals who, in the opinion of the township trustees, have demonstrated ”outstanding leadership and commitment to the community.”
“The recipient of the award has exemplified leadership through community service and community involvement,” said trustee chairman Steve Gerberry.
“The recipients of the award have helped our community envision the future, identify paths to success and carry out a vision. The individuals have exhibited integrity, collaboration, and intellectual, emotional, and social growth. The award is given to those who have gone before us and to those who continue to serve us.”
Scheckelhoff, who attended the event with his wife, Nancy, and family, said what is most important to him is the children he has been able to help.
”I have coached many of them and see them in the community all the time. For me it has always been about the community and the kids. It is good to see the kids succeed,” he said.
Scheckelhoff said the success of the youth is to be credited to a good school system.
He was raised in Youngstown and moved to Mineral Ridge in 1971. He and his wife have three children. Scheckelhoff is owner of Struthers Metal Services and has been involved in Mineral Ridge schools since the 1980s.
In recent years, Scheckelhoff has made donations to the school district, including a trophy case, band instruments, construction of a T-ball field, scoreboard at baseball fields and cards to help families at the holidays.
”I don’t need accolades. I want to help where I can,” said Scheckelhoff, who said he would not want to live anywhere else.
