WHAT: Board of Education meeting May 16

PRESENT: Joshua Garris, Aaron Wallace, Bruce Bacak, Cheryl Basista and Tim Gleason

The board:

l Hired Toni Wallace as speech language pathologist at $44,780;

l Approved 80 seniors for graduation, which was May 21 at the high school;

l Reported all 73 third-graders in the district passed the third-grade reading guarantee state test needed to advance to fourth grade.

WHAT: City Council meeting May 17

PRESENT: Robert Marino, Frank Pezzano, Steven Mientkiewicz, Linda Marchese, Barry Steffey, Michael Lastic, Ryan McNaughton, Stephen Papalas and Mayor Thomas Scarnecchia.


l Transferred $902,000 from the general fund to the police pension fund, fire pension fund, police and fire 1 percent fund and the cemetery fund;

l Amended an ordinance regarding the revocation of issuing and renewing dwelling permits to the owners of properties that have received at least three notices of criminal activity on their property and have not paid the cost abatement within 30 days;

l Amended some of the wording in the fire prevention code regarding definitions, bonfires and fireplaces.

WHAT: Board of Education meeting May 16

PRESENT: Susan Longacre, Mary Ann McMahon, Tony Perrone and Bobby Seifert

ABSENT: Rebecca DePanicis

The board:

l Approved the 2017-18 school calendar with first day for students Aug. 29 and last day May 24, 2018. Longacre said there will no longer be early release days for students. Instead, teachers will have four professional days, one each nine weeks, with no class for students;

l Approved high school seniors for graduation 7 p.m. today at Packard Music Hall;

l Approved summer intervention for Niles Primary School July 31 to Aug. 17 with certified staff taking part at $30 per hour;

l Approved summer intervention program for third-grade students May 31 to June 8 at Niles Intermediate School with certified staff taking part at $30 per hour;

l Received a donation of a U.S. flag in honor of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 11 presented by Robert Marino Sr.;

l Set the next meeting for 5 p.m. June 28 at the administration building and changed the July meeting to 5 p.m. July 31 at the administration building.
