Niles hosts annual Relay For Life

NILES — The Niles Relay For Life will be held 6 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Niles Wellness Center at Waddell Park, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.

This year’s theme is “The Movement to End Cancer.”

The event will kickoff with a survivors and caregivers lap 6 p.m. Friday, followed by a dinner for the survivors. There will be a luminary walk 9 p.m. and zumba 11:30 p.m.

Patrice Kish, lead relay event coordinator, said the 13 teams from Niles, Warren and Weathersfield will have area set up with games and activities planned.

She said there are more teams scheduled to participate this year than in the past.

Kish said new this year will be a craft show and vendors Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Donna Crean Dance Studio will perform Friday, and Saturday’s activities include a pancake breakfast 9 a.m., a K-9 unit demonstration 11:30 a.m., a performance by Patti Finnelli Dance Studio as well as a health and wellness fair.

Kish said teams were allowed to select their own ideas for their display and outfits. She said themes include football and cultural references.

”This makes the relay more fun when everyone can have their own theme,” Kish said.

The Niles Relay For Life started 15 years ago at Niles McKinley High School stadium and recently moved to the city wellness center.

Other local relays planned include 6 p.m. May 12 to 13 at Courthouse Square in Warren and 6 p.m. June 9 in Woodland Park in McDonald.

There will be a meeting 6 p.m. today at Niles United Methodist Church, Crandon Avenue, to finalize plans and team information. Interested participants and teams are welcome to attend.
