WHAT: Board of education meeting Wednesday

PRESENT: Mary Ann McMahon, Bobby Seifert, Rebecca DePanicis, Susan Giannetti Longacre, Tony Perrone, Superintendent Ann Marie Thigpen and Treasurer Lori Hudzik

The board:

• Approved financial reports for March;

• Accepted donations from Cortland Savings & Banking Company, A’s Pays Program, David Taylor and Kim Scarnecchia-Taylor, and Adrian and Susan Biviano;

• Approved the proposed five-year forecast for submission to the Financial Planning and Supervision Commission;

• Approved an agreement with NEOMIN internet service beginning July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2024, subject to financial commission approval;

• Accepted the retirement of Susan Gladysz from her position as a computer literacy teacher at Niles Middle School, effective June 1. Gladysz worked for the district for 20 years. Thigpen said enough Niles Education Association teachers have retired to put the incentive package the district is offering into effect;

• Accepted the retirements of Lori Joseph from her position as nurse at Niles Middle School and Niles Primary School and Caroline Matzye from her position as school nurse at Niles McKinley High School, effective June 1, 2019. Joseph had eight years of service with the district and Matzye had 33;

• Accepted the retirement of Iris Gilliam from the position of assistant cook at Niles Primary School after 14 years of service, effective June 1, 2019;

• Approved Trumbull County Educational Service Center substitute teachers for the remainder of the 2018 -19 school year;

• Granted tenure to Sarah Mattern, music teacher at Niles Primary School;

• Approved the transfer of Antoinette Monroe from her position as an assistant cook, two hours per day, to an assistant cook, 5.5 hours per day;

• Approved a one-year contract for Scott Libert as the assistant girls softball coach and John Moran Sr., as the girls softball coach;

• Approved memorandums of understanding between the Niles City School Board of Education and OAPSE Local No. 365 and the Niles Education Association regarding a retirement incentive;

• Approved continued membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association;

• Approved the Summer Intervention Program for students attending Niles Primary School. The program will be held July 29 through Aug. 15 at Niles Primary School. All certified staff involved in the intervention and training will receive a supplemental pay of $30 per hour and classified employees will be paid their per diem rate;

• Approved the Summer Intervention Program for third-grade students attending Niles Intermediate School, which will be May 30 through June 7. The program will offer third-graders who do not pass their ELA third-grade testing opportunity to retake the test, Thigpen said. Certified staff involved in the intervention and training will receive a supplemental pay of $30 per hour and classified employees will be paid their per-diem rate;

• Created a facilities maintenance committee that will be headed by Perrone with McMahon as an alternate.

• Reminded families that spring break is through April 29.
