Brookfield board accepts superintendent resignation

Leaving to head Lakeview school district

BROOKFIELD — Saying they were reluctant to vote on the issue, the Brookfield Board of Education on Wednesday accepted the resignation of Superintendent Velina Jo Taylor, effective July 31.

Taylor last week was approved as the new superintendent for the Lakeview Local School District, effective Aug. 1.

Board President Ronda Bonekovic, who voted “no” on the resignation in a symbolic gesture of support for Taylor, said the board was meeting in executive session to discuss options for finding a new superintendent, noting they may seek assistance from the Trumbull County Educational Service Center.

“We wish you the best and know you will do great things there (Lakeview),” Bonekovic said, noting she understood the motion needed to pass by a majority vote of the board, and it did even with her voting no.

Board member Kelly Carrier said Taylor “worked tirelessly for the district,” putting in many hours for projects and programs in the past three years.

In August 2016, Taylor was named the first female superintendent in Brookfield, replacing Tim Saxton, who left for West Branch Local Schools. She also had served as a principal at the high school and middle school since 2011 and was a teacher in the district for 16 years.

The Lakeview Board of Education approved a contract for Taylor at a salary of $111,000 per year. She will replace Robert Wilson, who is retiring July 31.

In another matter, the board tabled a motion to name Darla Davis as superintendent secretary and EMIS coordinator because they want to review whether to make the two positions separate. Bonekovic said the board is reviewing whether the EMIS coordinator would be a part-time position.

The position will become open as the board accepted the resignation of Susan Thomas as superintendent secretary/ EMIS coordinator, effective June 30. She has been with the district for 25 years.

The board also:

• Entered into an agreement with Mahoning Valley Regional Council of Government Services for providing career-related services and programs to the district for two years effective July 1 at no cost to the district;

• Accepted the retirement resignation of educational assistant Grace Vitello effective May 31. She has worked for the district for more than 30 years.
