Weathersfield applies for park grant

WEATHERSFIELD — The township is seeking several grants, including an Ohio Department of Natural Resources NatureWorks grant, which will be used to cover costs for expansion and other improvements of the community park off state Route 46.

Trustee Chairman Steve Gerberry said at Tuesday’s meeting the NatureWorks grant will help cover costs for two lots next to the park purchased by the township last year to make more room for parking spaces. The two lots at the northern section of the park had a house on it, which was torn down.

He said the township already spent its own money to purchase the lots, so the grant would be a reimbursement. Gerberry said the NatureWorks grant would provide 75 percent state funding at $32,625 and 25 percent local funding at $10,935 to offset the $43,500 cost. Gerberry said trustees are pretty confident the township will get the grant.

He said the additional property is a major component of larger plans for the park and future recreational purposes, including a community center building to be used for training by police departments and also for public use.

Officials have said they are hoping to have work begin this year on the $500,000 multi-jurisdictional training center. Officials said a goal is to have the building completed within two years.

Trustees also are seeking several other grants, including:

• $14,010 equipment grant from Ohio Department of Commerce Division of State Fire Marshal’s Office for six sets of turnout gear for the fire department. There is no local match required;

• $1,400 training grant from the State Fire Marshal’s Office to reimburse the fire department the cost of firefighter certification classes. There is no local match;

• $2,275 scrap tire grant from the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District.

In other business, trustees announced Armstrong Cable will be raising rates starting in March with expanded cable service increasing from $91.45 to $98.45 per month.
