Rally held for man shot by police
NILES — More than 50 people gathered Sunday afternoon for a 45-minute rally outside the Niles police station to remember and show support for Matthew Burroughs, 35, who was killed Jan. 2 in an officer-related shooting.
Rally attendees held signs and chanted for justice for Burroughs.
Burroughs was shot Jan. 2 by police as they were attempting to arrest him on a warrant at the Royal Mall Apartments. Police said at a press conference last week that Burroughs first struck a probation officer with an open car door as he fled Niles Municipal Court. Later, at the apartment complex, Burroughs drove toward officers, who “perceived a threat to their safety and fired their service weapons,” Niles police Chief Jay Holland said.
The coroner has ruled Burroughs’ death a homicide.
Niles police reported no incidents at the rally Sunday.
