Falls board reviews options
NEWTON FALLS — Members of the Newton Falls Board of Education’s finance committee will meet with Treasurer Julie Sloan about options to place an earned-income tax levy on the May primary ballot.
Board President Debra Davis said Thursday finance members Jennifer Urbania and Aimee Crowder will review levy options of whether to go with a 1.5 percent or 1.75 percent earned income tax.
Officials have said there is a 4.8-mill emergency operating levy on the books which expires at the end of 2019 and a 6.2-mill emergency levy which expires at the end of 2020.
The two renewals would bring in $1.3 million, while school officials say a 1.5 percent earned-income tax would generate $1.9 million.
With an earned income tax, everyone contributes not just property owners.
Sloan has said if a new levy is passed, the two emergency levies would then not be renewed and drop off in a few years.
The board has until early next year to get the issue on the May primary.
Also, the district will wait until 2019 as recommended by a forester to sell timber from trees on school property to help generate revenue for the district.
