Falls manager to retire as council seeks replacement

Village council narrows search to four candidates

NEWTON FALLS — Village manager Jack Haney has submitted his retirement resignation effective Oct. 30, as village council has begun interviews this week for a replacement.

The letter was sent to council members and officials last week and is scheduled to be on Monday’s council meeting agenda.

Council met in special session this week to review 44 applications received for the village manager position. The list was narrowed down to four candidates –E. Thomas Ault of Louisville, Kevin Brooks of Akron, Ted Andrejwoksi of Eastlake and David Lynch of Euclid. The four were scheduled to be interviewed this week.

In May, council voted 3-2 not to renew Haney’s contract.

His contract is set to end Nov. 30, so council will need to address his leaving one month earlier in terms of unused sick and vacation time. His contract of $87,500 was from June 2015 to Nov. 30, 2018. He has served more than 11 years in the village, starting in 2007.

Mayor Lyle Waddell, who has worked with Haney for the past eight years, said he has not spoken to council about what they intend to do next.

He said Haney has done “a great job as the city manager longer than anyone serving the community.”

Waddell said Haney was able to bring in many grants for projects in the community, made many connections with county and state officials and also was very involved with annexation issues in Newton Falls in recent years.

Haney said he was leaving a month earlier as he has “other things that he is looking at.”

He said he enjoyed serving the community and being involved with such projects as the village’s comprehensive plan, strategic business plan, $2.5 million in grants for traffic signals and other projects, the new stair project by the falls put in by the 910th Airlift Wing, and housing demolition to remove blight.

Third Ward Councilman Mark Stimpert asked the five-member council to review the list of applicants and each select the three they would like to have interviewed and to also come up with three questions they would like to ask the candidates who are selected for interviews.

Stimpert said council will meet in executive session at Monday’s meeting on the four candidates. He said council would like to have someone in place by Nov. 1 and will address all matters regarding the manager at future council meetings.
