Crosses placed for overdose victims

WARREN — To remember the 135 people who died in 2017 from accidental drug overdoses in Trumbull County, Solace of the Valley placed 135 crosses on the lawn at Courthouse Square in Warren.

The crosses were placed Thursday morning and were expected to stand until about 10 p.m. Thursday evening, said Linda Spies, founder of the group that promotes public awareness about addiction and recovery and strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding the disease.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. Trumbull County will commemorate it with a candlelight vigil sponsored by Trumbull County Strong at 6 p.m. at the Trumbull County Courthouse. There will be speakers and musicians, as well as a reading of the names of lives lost to addiction.

OhioCAN Mahoning County will commemorate it with events beginning 5 p.m. today at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown, 1105 Elm St.
