Warren Fire Department gets grant

WARREN — A $69,170 grant received by the fire department from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program will be used to purchase cardiovascular and other exercise equipment and provide training for the department.

The city will provide a 10 percent local match to grant, which was awarded by the Department of Homeland Security. Fire Chief Ken Nussle said the equipment and training is needed to make sure his firefighters are in the top physical condition required for their jobs.

“There is no doubt that our firefighters must do difficult things that require them to be in superb physical and cardiovascular health,” Nussle said. ” Maintaining good fitness can help firefighters cut down on neck, back and shoulder injuries that routinely occur on the fire ground. This will also reduce Workman’s Compensation rate and time lost to injuries.”
