WHAT: Board of Education special meeting Monday

PRESENT: Pete Cardiero, Karen Thomas, Mark Zuppo, Sue Ellen Davis and Diane Alejars

The board:

• Was to meet Tuesday with Axiom Architects LLC of Youngstown on designs for the planned new 1,000-seat performing arts center and auditorium to be added to the high school on Shannon Road. The meeting is to update the board on the timeline of the project set to begin in early 2019;

• Heard from Cardiero the Ohio Department of Transportation is planning to add sidewalks to the east side of Gary Avenue and the north side of Stull Avenue to make it easier for students to get to and from the high school. Zuppo said the city and school district each would contribute $60,000 to the project with work to begin this summer;

• Hired Karen Klem as a guidance counselor for grades K-3 at Prospect Elementary School. The one-year contract pays $61,000. She previously worked as a guidance counselor at Niles McKinley High School and at Lowellville and Chaney high schools;

• Hired Christina Humphries as a clerical assistant for special education director; Erin Loomis as intervention specialist at Prospect Elementary and Bradley Harper as a bus driver.
