Three so far pursue Niles mayor position
NILES — A safety director, a city councilman and a painting contractor all have their hat in the ring to be the next mayor of Niles. Applications are being accepted through Tuesday.
Safety Director George Kaniclides, who submitted a resume and letter Thursday, is the latest to apply for the position vacated by Thomas Scarnecchia June 20.
Resident Stephen Hrosar, owner of S&K Painting Inc., was the first to apply for the position the day after Scarnecchia’s retirement announcement, and Councilman Barry Profato, D-at Large, filed for the position Tuesday.
Residents who wish to apply for the position must submit a letter and resume to Trumbull County Democratic Party Chairman Dan Polivka or to the Trumbull County Board of Elections by Tuesday.
The Niles Democratic Central Committee expects to vote on and name Scarnecchia’s replacement July 18, according to Polivka.
Scarnecchia, 76, defeated incumbent Niles Mayor Ralph Infante, the longest-serving mayor in Niles history, in the 2015 Democratic primary.
His resignation comes just weeks after Infante was sentenced to 10 years in the Lorain Correctional Institution on numerous corruption and gambling charges.
Scarnecchia’s term ends in December 2019. Whoever is chosen to fill the term would have to run again in the May 2019 Democratic primary election and, if successful, in the November 2019 general election to retain the seat for a new term.
