Shooting accident sends one to hospital

NILES — A man was accidentally shot Sunday by his friend on Roberts Street.

Steven Pence, 24, of Warren, was shot by friend William Stefan, 24, of Roberts Street, a police report states. Stefan told police he was showing Pence, who was seated in a van, the 40 caliber Smith & Wesson when it accidentally discharged. The bullet went through Pence’s right calf and lodged in his left calf, the report states.

Stefan called 911 and used his belt to make a tourniquette for Pence’s right leg and Pence was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital by paramedics, the report states. Police Chief Jay Holland, who said every gun should always be treated as if it is loaded when being handled, said detectives will meet with the prosecutor to determine if any charges are warranted.
