Schools to get full-time resource officer

CHAMPION — Since the Champion School District will soon have a new PK-8 school complex opening this summer next to the high school off state Route 45, the Board of Education has approved having a full-time school resource officer to provide protection.

The board on Monday approved a full-time resource officer to work eight-hours per day for 176 days for the 2018-19 year. School Treasurer Lorena Rouan said the district now has a part-time resource officer filled by Champion police at $25 per hour.

She said the salary for the full-time position will be determined, but she has budgeted an additional $35,000 to cover costs.

The resource officer will arrive one-half hour before school starts and stay after school for a short period.

Many local schools, including Bristol, Southington, Joseph Badger and Girard, have added school resource officers for 2018-19 year.

The school district ended its year Wednesday with both Central Elementary and Champion Middle School set to be demolished in September. A public community open house will be held 3:15 to 6:15 p.m. today followed by a farewell tribute 6:15 p.m. today at the elementary school.

Rouan said Basinger Auctioneers will tag items at the two schools for the public to later bid for online. She said the public will have the opportunity to see the items before bidding.

Also, the board is seeking a full-time assistant principal for the new school complex. Applications will be accepted through June 8 with the person selected to receive a 198-day contract starting Aug. 3.

The board previously accepted the resignation of Edward Kempers, who had served as assistant principal at the elementary and middle schools.

In other action, the board:

• Received a donation of a 10-by-19 foot United States flag from resident Jeffrey Cellars;

• Reported work will begin this summer at the high school for new gym bleachers, ceiling repairs, parking lot and ticket booth;

• Approved Rebecca Baxter as after-school STEM advisor at the high school;
