Investigation continues into shooting death

WARREN — The Warren man who was gunned down in an early Sunday morning shooting at a northwest side home was not “a well-liked guy,” according Warren police’s chief of detectives.

Capt. Robert Massucci said his detectives are encountering little or no cooperation in the investigation of the death of Antoine Johnson, 34, at 1876 Idywild St. NE.

Johnson was found on the sidewalk outside his home after 3 p.m. Sunday, a police report states. Police were called to investigate the sounds of gunfire. Massucci said detectives have not made any arrests because no one is talking.

“He (Johnson) was not an innocent victim,” Massucci said, noting that Johnson had an extensive criminal record.

Trumbull County Jail records show Johnson being booked in March 26, 2018, on a drug possession charge. Common Pleas court records show this arrest was in reference to a crack cocaine drug arrest by the Ohio State Highway Patrol on Oct. 13, 2017. Court records show he was released by Judge Peter Kontos on a personal recognizance bond and was scheduled for pre-trial May 21 before Kontos.

Federal court records show Johnson was sentenced Nov. 13, 2008, to 151 months in prison on federal charges of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. That sentence was reduced to 110 months by federal Judge Sara Lioi on Dec. 3, 2014. Upon his release in late 2015, court records show Johnson had twice violated his federal parole.

According to the Trumbull County Coroner’s Office, Johnson’s body was taken to the Cuyahoga County medical examiner for an autopsy, which was to be conducted Monday. However, a spokeswoman for interim Trumbull County Coroner Dr. Thomas James said autopsy results had not been released as of Tuesday afternoon.

Autopsies for Trumbull County crime victims are now being conducted in Cuyahoga County because of last month’s death of Coroner Dr. Humphrey Germaniuk, who was also a forensic pathologist.
