Bishop leaves committee

YOUNGSTOWN–Bishop George Murry of the Diocese of Youngstown has stepped down as chair of the ad hoc committee against racism because he is being treated for acute leuekemia at the Cleveland Clinic.

Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galevston-Houston, president of the U.S Conference of Catholic Bishops, has appointed Bishop Shelton Fabre of Houma-Thibodaux to serve as chair of the committee.

Msgr. John Zuraw, chancellor of the Diocese, said Murry decided to step down from the committee because of the importance of the work needing to be done by the committee and recommendations and decisions expected later this year.

The committee will focus on addressing racism in society, even in the church, and the urgent need to come together as a society to find solutions.
