Niles cop honored for saving suicidal man

NILES — A Niles police lieutenant received a state honor for his role in saving the life of a suicidal man in December.

Lt. Dan Adkins was named Ohio’s Crisis Intervention Team Officer of the Year, according to a news release from the Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board. Adkins, who is trained in crisis negotiation and intervention, was able to convince the suicidal man to come down from a radio tower after about an hour.

Police Chief Jay Holland said Adkins was one of 88 officers in the state who were in the running for the honor. Adkins will receive the award May 4 in Columbus.
