No jail time in child porn case

WARREN — A man from Masury guilty of having an enormous number of pornographic images and videos involving children on his computers will not serve time in prison.

Stephen Michael Sample, 44, was placed on probation and labeled a Tier 2 sex offender Wednesday by Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge W. Wyatt McKay.

Sample faced up to 120 years in prison on the 15 counts of pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor. He pleaded guilty in January. The Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office recommended Sample serve eight years.

“In our system of justice, the judge decides what the appropriate sentence is. All we can do is make a recommendation,” said Gabriel Wildman, Trumbull County assistant prosecutor.

Sample, 2098 Custer Orangeville Road, faced 20 counts of the felony when he was indicted in August 2016. In common parlance, the charge means he disseminated, transferred, reproduced or duplicated the images and videos, 1 million of which were found on his computer when he was arrested.

Law enforcement raided Sample’s home in February 2016, taking with them electronics, computers and cell phones. He was downloading pornographic images when law enforcement came into the house, according to prosecutors. Images included girls as young as 8, according to the charges against Sample.

Being a Tier 2 sex offender, Sample is required to register his whereabouts with the sheriff in his county of residence twice a year for the next 25 years.
