Champion schools get auditor award

CHAMPION — The Champion Local School District was given the Auditor of State Award after receiving a clean audit report from Ohio Auditor Dave Yost.

The award is given to entities that receive audits free from findings for recovery, material citations or weaknesses and significant deficiencies. Jackson-Milton Local School District also received the award.

Taxpayer help offered in Niles

NILES — Niles will be hosting a R.I.T.A. walk-in Taxpayer Assistance Day 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Niles Wellness Center, 213 Sharkey Drive.

R.I.T.A. auditors will be available in the conference room to assist taxpayers who would like to file their municipal taxes from Niles, Newton Falls, Girard and McDonald.

Man shot, killed after transaction

YOUNGSTOWN — A man was shot to death in the 700 block of Sherwood Avenue Thursday evening following an online sales transaction that turned into a robbery.

Tribune news partner WKBN 27 said two people went to a house around 7 p.m. to sell some cellphones after contacting the buyer online. When they got there, investigators said two other people robbed them and one of the sellers was shot and killed.

The robbers ran away and police later learned the house where the sale was supposed to happen is vacant, WKBN reported. Youngstown police are asking anyone with information to call them at 330-742-8929 or Crimestoppers at 330-746-CLUE (2583).

Library scans millionth item

COLUMBUS — The library system in Ohio’s capital city says archivists have scanned the 1 millionth item into the system’s digital collection.

The Columbus Metropolitan Library says the item is a panorama photograph taken from the cupola atop the Ohio Statehouse.
