Youngstown man indicted in robbery

WARREN — A Youngstown man accused of robbing the Boost Mobile store in Niles late last year was indicted on a host of felony charges Tuesday by a Trumbull County grand jury.

Jonathan K. Smith, 37, faces two counts of aggravated robbery with firearm specifications, kidnapping with firearm specification, having weapons while under disability, carrying concealed weapon and improperly handling firearms in motor vehicle.

Smith, who Trumbull County Jail records state is being held in lieu of posting a $25,000 bond, faces a potential maximum sentence of 35 years in prison. Court records show Smith is expected to be arraigned this morning before Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge W. Wyatt McKay.

Niles police said Smith was arrested Dec. 23 after he was tracked by a mobile phone app to the Giant Eagle plaza parking lot in Howland. Police said Smith had earlier robbed the store on Youngstown Warren Road at gunpoint.

The robber held several customers at bay before making off with cash and a couple of cell phones, a police report states.
