Deputy engineer wins local award

WARREN — Gary Shaffer, Trumbull County deputy engineer, won the title of Engineer of the Year this month at the first Mahoning Valley Engineer of the Year Awards.

The event was hosted Feb. 23 by the Tech Belt Energy Innovation Center, in partnership with the Valley Alliance for Science and Technology, and Shaffer was nominated by Julie Green, grants manager for Trumbull County.

Green described Shaffer’s work for the county, which includes helping to secure more than $1 million in grant money and serving as primary contact on the Golden Triangle project, taking the lead on bringing compressed natural gas vehicles into the county fleet, and running a bridge replacement program.

“Each of these projects benefits all of Trumbull County as well as the entire Mahoning Valley,” Green wrote in the nomination form. “Important economic development projects serve to increase opportunities for job creation and wealth creation, which improves the quality of life for all of our residents.”
