April 16 trial asked for Hoerig

Faces aggravated murder charges in death of husband

WARREN — Trumbull County prosecutors are asking that the aggravated murder trial of Claudia C. Hoerig be set for April 16.

Hoerig was brought back to Trumbull County on Jan. 17 to stand trial for the March 12, 2007, death of her husband, Karl Hoerig. Hoerig left the United States and moved to her native Brazil several days before Karl Hoerig, a major in the U.S. Air Force, was found murdered in the couple’s Newton Falls home.

Karl Hoerig was shot in the back of his head March 12, 2007, while tying his shoes. His body was found by police three days later. Claudia Hoerig emptied his bank account, wired money to relatives in Brazil and bought a .357 revolver on the day of the shooting, according to investigators.

It is believed she used her husband’s status as a commercial airline pilot to fly to Brazil, where she remained for almost 11 years while local, state and federal law enforcement and elected officials fought to have her brought back to stand trial.

“For approximately one-and-a-half years, Hoerig was imprisoned in Brazil pending the outcome of extradition proceedings, including legal efforts before the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court,” according to filings submitted by Prosecutor Dennis Watkins.
