Southington selects two board members

SOUTHINGTON — The Southington Board of Education started the year with only three members and now has a full five-member slate with the approval of two additional members.

The board on Thursday selected John Shaffer, who had served on the board previously, and Richard Selep to fill two unexpired terms that are each for two more years through December 2019.

Board of Education President Betsy Dunn said Shaffer, who is an engineer, was asked to return to the board based on his previous experience as a board member when filling the term for former board member Robert Baugher.

”The board knew what he has done as a board member before and his experience in what the board deals with,” she said.

Selep, retired from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, will fill the remainder of the unexpired term of Thomas Proverbs, who had previously filled in for part of the term of Patricia Anderson when she left the board. Proverbs chose not to continue serving the remainder of Anderson’s term.

Also applying for a seat was resident Edward Speaker.

Dunn said Selep and Speaker were both ”well qualified” and ”it was a tough decision to make by the board as a whole,” but members felt Selep would best serve in the position as the board deals with negotiations and other issues.

”All three brought interesting views and ideas to the board,” Dunn said of the three applicants.

In other business, the board:

• Named Dunn as president and Steve Gilanyi as vice president;

• Approved the following appointments: Albert Haberstroh, legislative liaison and records; Dunn, student achievement and safety; Gilanyi, athletic council; Shaffer, financial and audit; and Selep, buildings and grounds;

• Set meetings for 6 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month in school complex media center with June to be rescheduled;

• Heard from Superintendent Rocco Nero the school district will host ”History Day” Feb. 20.
