Pa. man killed in turnpike crash

HUDSON — The Hiram Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred just after 3 p.m. Friday on Interstate 80 in Summit County.

Jarrod T. Mochnick, 25, of Coraopolis, Pa., was driving a 2014 Ford Fusion east on the Ohio Turnpike when he ran off the left side of the road and almost struck the concrete median. He came back onto the road and crossed three lanes of traffic before being struck by a commercial tractor trailer, according to the patrol.

The truck struck the passenger side of Mochnick’s vehicle and the impact caused the truck driver, Shaun A. Smith, 40, of Sunrise, Fla., to drive off the right side of the road.

Mochnick was pronounced dead at Akron City Hospital. Smith suffered only minor injuries, the patrol said.

The crash is still under investigation.
