8-car pileup snarls Route 82 traffic
HOWLAND — A band of heavy snowfall is being blamed for a multivehicle pileup crash Monday afternoon on state Route 82 west between the state Route 46 and East Market Street exits.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said at the time of the crash, around 3:40 p.m., there was heavy snowfall, limiting visibility and leaving the road completely snow-covered.
Eight vehicles were involved, the patrol said.
There were several injuries, but none was life-threatening and two people were taken to the hospital for treatment, according to the patrol.
Of the eight vehicles involved, five had to be towed from the scene.
The westbound lanes of state Route 82 were closed for approximately 2 1/2 hours.
Police blocked off the Route 82 westbound ramp from Route 46 to enable cars stuck behind the pileup to exit the freeway using what is normally the on ramp for Route 82.
Traffic also became backed up on state Route 46 as hundreds of cars were being rerouted onto what is an already congested road.
The patrol said several other crashes occurred in the area, both ahead of and behind the pileup, around the same time.
None of those crashes was serious, according to the Trumbull County 911 Center.
The Howland Township Police Department assisted at the scene and also with all the crash investigations.
The incident remains under investigation, and no citations have been issued. The names of all the drivers involved were not released by the patrol.
