Juveniles charged in Salem fire

SALEM — Two 17-year-olds from the Lisbon area spent the night in the Tobin juvenile detention center after being charged Thursday with delinquency in relation to arson at the former Salem China factory.

A suspicious vehicle complaint from Tuesday afternoon and a description that included the license plate number ultimately led to the arrests.

According to the report, a resident on Cherry Street called police at 1:44 p.m. to report two males driving a gold-colored car parked on the street and entered a junk yard property and went west toward the old Salem China building located on the other side of the property. Officers and K-9 Argo checked the area, but were unable to find anyone.

Around 3:30 p.m., the fire department received a call about smoke coming from the Salem China building, which burned well past midnight.

“Following up on tips and speaking with some associates of the first juvenile, we were able to identify the second juvenile,” Salem police Detective Dave Talbert said.

Both were brought to the Salem Police Department with their parents for interviews and he said “they are cooperating at this time.”
