WHAT: Board of Education meeting Monday
PRESENT: Calvin Jones, Diana DeVito, Scott Davis, Carmen Faustino and James Jones
The board:
• Approved changes to the district’s gifted policy, which is mandated by the state and includes additional training of teachers who instruct gifted programs offered locally at Trumbull Educational Service Center;
• Approved making ski club an approved club activity with one coordinator;
• Approved Shelley Berlin and Holly McNees as support tutors to provide assistance for special education students not to exceed 20 hours per week;
• Approved the seventh- and eighth-grade band to perform Dec. 15 and the fifth- to eighth- grade choir to perform Dec. 18, both at Eastwood Mall in Niles.
• Rescheduled the next meeting to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 18 in high school cafeteria because of the holidays. Student recognition is planned, which is why the meeting is being held in the cafeteria.
Warren Township
WHAT: Trustee meeting Tuesday
PRESENT: Ed Anthony and Bob Bush
ABSENT: Kay Anderson
Trustees:
• Approved a new three-year contract with the local Ohio Civil Service Employees Association, which represents two road department workers. The contract grants a 1.5 percent pay increase each year. The contract is effective Jan. 1, 2018, and expires Dec. 31, 2020;
• Heard from resident Butch Elser, who asked that two street lights be placed at intersections on Rio Vista Road, noting it is very dark at night for motorists and residents. Trustees said they will look into the request and see what funds are available. Anthony said the lighting also will help deter car break-ins and thefts;
• Appointed Nancy Bee and Helen Parker to one-year terms on the fire dependency board;
• Announced trustees will hold a pre-construction meeting 9 a.m. today with the Trumbull County Engineer’s Office for the Caleb Road drainage project to be completed this year;
• Rescheduled the next meeting from 7 p.m. Dec. 26 to Dec. 12 because of Christmas.
