Couple arrested after fight over underwear

AUSTINTOWN — A married couple is awaiting trial on domestic violence charges stemming from a dispute over a dirty pair of boxer shorts, according to a police report.

Joseph Gionfriddo, 69, and Helen Gionfriddo, 86, both of South Edgehill Avenue, were arrested on charges of domestic violence after a fight at their home because Helen accused Joseph of throwing his dirty underwear in the bathtub.

Both appeared in Mahoning County Court earlier this week, where they pleaded not guilty and a trial date was set for Dec. 6, court records show.

Police, who the report states have been called to the home several times for domestic incidents, said Helen could be heard on the phone with dispatchers saying “I’m tired of this.”

Joseph, who a report states had small cuts on his chin and cheek, told police Helen attacked him and punched him several times over a pair of his underwear being in the bathtub.

Helen, who told police she attacked Joseph because he puts his underwear in the bathtub to upset her, also accused Joseph of having a girlfriend at a nearby gas station.

Helen claimed Joseph choked her with a pair of jeans, according to the report, and police saw redness on her chest area.

Police arrested both because they each had physical injuries.

Joseph has previous convictions for domestic violence and violating a protection order, according to court records.
