Council hopeful may owe taxes

NILES — A Niles city councilman running unopposed for council president Nov. 7 was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on a misdemeanor charge of failing to pay his city taxes, according to Niles Municipal Court records.

Barry Steffey appeared Thursday in municipal court, where he pleaded no contest and paid $1,500 for the two-year tax bill, interest and court costs, according to Tribune Chronicle news partner WKBN-27.

Steffey did not immediately return a message seeking comment Thursday night, but told WKBN he made an honest mistake and as soon as he was made aware of it, he made arrangements to pay it of
