Wed. 10:45 a.m.: Classes resume at Austintown Fitch after morning evacuation

AUSTINTOWN – Classes at Austintown Fitch High School have resumed after students were evacuated for approximately 25 minutes this morning because of a “strong, smoke-like smell” caused by malfunctioning parts in the the heating/air conditioning system, administrators said.

A teacher detected the odor in a first floor classroom and immediately alerted the main office, according to a news release from the principal’s office.

The building was evacuated and the Austintown Fire Department was called to the scene. It was determined the motor and transformer for an air-handler had malfunctioned.

Students returned to the building after school officials received the OK from the fire department.

“At no time was anybody’s safety compromised. Our township safety forces did an outstanding job of advising us the whole time,” said Christopher Berni, principal.

The classroom where the smoke smell was detected is not being occupied while the fire department fixes the air handler transformer. Students will be permitted back into that classroom after the transformer is repaired.
