GM Lordstown unions to merge

LORDSTOWN — United Auto Workers Local 1714, which has represented autoworkers at the General Motors Lordstown complex for nearly 50 years, will be absorbed by UAW Local 1112 in the near future.

Local 1714 President Robert Morales told Tribune Chronicle news partner WKBN-27 the move is being done to make the plant more competitive. He also said the union is shrinking because of retirements and it’s easier for the corporate office to negotiate with one union rather than two.

Local 1112 President Glenn Johnson called it “a necessary competitive agreement.”

“Put ourselves in line with other manufacturers that all operate under one local union,” Johnson told WKBN.

GM Lordstown spokesman Tom Mock said in an email that “Lordstown employees have been notified of planned adjustments to manufacturing and administrative operations at the complex. Hourly employees will be receiving additional information pertaining to these plans from their union leadership.”

The union plans to hold future meetings before the change goes into effect, but the autoworkers officially were told Friday that the merger is happening, Johnson said.
