Girard councilman resigns

GIRARD — After serving 21 months on city council, 3rd Ward Councilman Keith Schubert submitted his resignation because he is moving in October to a home in the 1st Ward. The resignation is effective Oct. 1.

“It has been a pleasure to serve my ward, as well as the entire city over the last 21 months,” Schubert read in a letter to Mayor James Melfi and city council.

Schubert said he plans to run for council in his new ward.

Council President Reynald Paolone said according to the Trumbull County Board of Elections and Dan Polivka, chairman of the Trumbull County Democratic Party, Schubert’s name will still appear in the November general election ballot for the city’s 3rd Ward race since the ballots have already been printed. However, people will not be able to vote for him.

“The precinct committee people can meet to decide whether to fill the remainder of his term through Dec. 31, or they have the option not to. Come Jan. 1, Mr. Polivka can call a meeting of the precinct committee people to meet and take applications for the position and then appoint a new 3rd Ward councilman,” Paolone said.
