Sustainability experts to speak at Seven Springs

Tribune Chronicle

WARREN — Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start or how to get even more out of your already self-sufficient, simple lifestyle, which is where the Mother Earth News Fair comes in.

The fair will be Sept. 15-17 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort, 777 Waterwheel Drive, Seven Springs, Pa. It runs noon to 6 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Among the more than 100 hands-on, interactive workshops are food preparation and preservation, small-scale and backyard livestock, green building, organic gardening, natural health and renewable energy.

The sustainable and rural lifestyle experts from across the U.S. who will lead the sessions include:

• Fermentation authority Sandor Katz will discuss how fermentation works, its health benefits and how simple techniques of vegetable fermentation can be used creatively;

• Joel Salatin, organic farmer and author, will illustrate how stable ecologies mimic historic normalcy and how to use that perspective to rethink the future by taking attendees on a journey of a frog living in a pond 500 years ago;

• Organic gardening author Barbara Pleasant will offering tips and ideas to help attendees eat from the garden year-round;

• Mycologist Tradd Cotter will lead a mushroom hunt throughout the Seven Springs grounds;

• Shane Gebauer, president of Brushy Mountain Bee Farm, will share how to get started in beekeeping and demonstrate a live hive installation with real bees;

• Jessi Bloom, author and permaculturalist, will detail the basics and benefits of permaculture and complete systems for gardening with resiliency.

There will also be activities for children, livestock and vendor demonstrations, hundreds of vendors and local and organic food options.

Weekend wristband passes cost $25 in advance or $35 at the gate. Children 17 and under get in free.
