Patrol reports woman killed by airborne deer

KINSMAN — A deer launched into the air after it was struck by a vehicle Thursday night on state Route 7 killed a mother in a passing vehicle after it went through the windshield.

Amy M. Stoneburner, 39, of Negley, was in the vehicle with her two children, ages 9 and 12, when she was killed, according to the Warren post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The children and the driver, Daniel Stoneburner, 37, of Negley, were transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the first vehicle that struck the deer, Jerome H. Hough, 69, of Williamsfield, and his three passengers were not injured. Hough was driving a 1999 Toyota Camry.

The crash happened around 10:15 p.m. north of Webber Cole Road. The Stoneburners were traveling south and Hough was heading north.

Sgt. Phil Robinson said reports have not been finalized for the crash, but deer that are hit hard enough to become airborne typically die. He did not want to speculate on the way Stoneburner was killed in the accident.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, according to the patrol.

Emergency responders from Kinsman and Johnston and the Kinsman Fire Department assisted at the scene. Stoneburner died at the scene.

A homeowner near the crash told Trumbull County 911 dispatchers she could hear screaming after hearing the loud noise from her home in the 9600 block of state Route 7.

Another 911 caller told dispatchers, “A deer ran across, one car hit it going one way, another car hit it going the other way. There’s people bleeding. I don’t know how bad the injuries are… The mother is still in the car… (The two children) have blood all over them.”

Another caller reported, “We have a deer-car accident… The lady is not breathing. She is severely injured. She is bleeding… Might need a helicopter too. It’s really bad.”
