Middlefield teen killed in crash
CHARDON — A Middlefield teenager died and a Chardon teenager was critically injured when their car was struck by a commercial truck on state Route 44 Tuesday afternoon.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Jackson Condon, 17, of Chardon, was driving a 2010 Toyota Prius west on Hosford Road around 12:25 p.m. when he failed to stop at the intersection of state Route 44 and was struck in the passenger side by a truck driven by Sean Gates, 46, of Erie, Pa.
Condon was taken by helicopter to Cleveland Metro Hospital with life-threatening injuries, the patrol report states. His passenger, Dominic Ricci, 18, of Middlefield, was pronounced dead at Tri Point Hospital.
Gates was not injured. The patrol said all occupants were wearing seat belts, and drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash. It also said cell phone usage does not appear to be a contributing circumstance.
The crash is still under investigation.
