Man gets 28 months on sex charges

WARREN — A Warren man accused of sex-related charges involving a minor was sentenced Tuesday to 28 months in prison in connection to the three felonies filed against him.

Derwin Norman Jr., 22, also was labeled by Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Andrew Logan a Tier II sex offender, which means when Norman is released from prison he will be required to register his whereabouts with the sheriff’s office in his county of residence every six months for 25 years.

Logan sentenced Norman, 1360 Autumn Drive NW, to simultaneous 18-month sentences on charges of compelling prostitution and escape and 10 more months on a charge of illegal use of a minor in nudity oriented material or performance. Norman also will be on probation for five years when he’s released.

Norman’s attorney, David Engler, said Norman is “remorseful” for the “serious, horrific” decisions he made.

“He is remorseful, and he regrets becoming involved with a young runaway,” said Engler.

Niles police were called March 8 to investigate a suspected robbery at 164 Wade St. in Niles where a 15-year-old girl reported missing out of Youngstown had jumped out of a window.

Norman was arrested that day and taken to Trumbull Memorial for treatment of cuts, reports state. Later, he escaped from Niles officers, with reports stating officers found him hiding in bushes across the street from the hospital.
