Mahoning health chief Athena winner

BOARDMAN — Mahoning County District Board of Health Commissioner Patricia Sweeney was chosen among 18 Mahoning Valley women as the winner of the 25th annual Athena Award presented by the Regional Chamber.

The Athena Award is given annually to recognize area business and professional women who have demonstrated excellence in their chosen career, provided leadership in the community and mentored or contributed to the growth of other professional women.

Sweeney has been health commissioner since 2012 and is the first woman to serve in the post, according to biographical information provided by the chamber. She earned her associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in nursing at Youngstown State University and her Master of Public Health and law degrees at the University of Pittsburgh.
