Falls roads to be resurfaced

NEWTON FALLS — Roads in Newton Falls will be resurfaced following city council’s approval last week.

Mayor Lyle Waddell will enter into an agreement with American Contracting Inc. of Youngstown.

The roads to be resurfaced include Warren Road between Arlington Boulevard and East Broad Street; Warren Road from Columbia Avenue to Ticknor Avenue; Newton Drive from Freedom Avenue to the west; and the entirety of Freedom Road.

The city chose American Contracting Inc., as lowest and best bid at $67,245, from among five bids. The bid was below the Trumbull County Engineer’s estimate of $75,634.

To help alleviate the costs of resurfacing the roads, the city of Newton Falls partnered with the Trumbull County Engineer’s office, which also will be able to help with any technical questions the city may have.

“This is our first year partnering with the engineer’s office with the roads,” street superintendent Harry Shaver said.

No start date has been set for the paving project, but each stretch of road is expected to take only a couple days, officials said. The roads will be paved one at a time to limit traffic congestion, Shaver said.

Waddell said paving priority is based on examination of village streets by the road superintendent.

“We have a plan to pave every year,” Waddell said. “Next year we’ll determine which roads need it.”
