Man, 63, found dead in vehicle

Warren police investigating first homicide of 2017

WARREN — City detectives are looking into the circumstances surrounding Tuesday night’s fatal shooting of a 63-year-old Youngstown man who was found dead in a car parked outside the Candlelight apartments off North Road SE.

Warren police officers found William E. Anderson, 2404 Ohio Ave., shortly after 10 p.m., according to the report. Anderson was slumped over the steering wheel of his black Ford Taurus that was parked outside 1270 Harvard Drive SE, the report states.

Anderson suffered a gunshot wound to his neck and he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, the report states. An autopsy with an official ruling on the cause of death is pending from the Trumbull County Coroner’s office.

Police Chief Eric Merkel said the shooting will be investigated as a homicide, but investigators said so far, they have no leads in the case.

A passerby called 911 to report he saw a car parked outside an apartment complex with the passenger door open. The passerby told a 911 dispatcher that the man behind the wheel was an “elderly male who looks dead.” The caller told the dispatcher the man had blood in his mouth and was unresponsive.

The caller told dispatchers he did not hear any gunshots, but someone from a neighboring apartment came outside saying he heard “loud cracks.”

This would be the first homicide in Warren for the year. The last fatal shooting in the city occurred on Nov. 12 when 22-year-old Becky Pyne, a mother of a 2-month-old, was shot to death outside her 229 S. Leavitt Road home.

Pyne’s boyfriend, Shaun Simpson, has been charged in her death, with court records showing that proceedings have been delayed while the court determines competency of the defendant.
